What we do

We're serious about seeing education in South Africa improved.

We address the challenges in four ways.

1. CASPER

Our Constructive AfterSchool Programme for EnRichment was launched in 2012 as means of creating safe and constructive after-school environments in impoverished rural areas.

Using facilitators, we offer learners reading and writing support in their home language along with various activities including Lego programmes, robotics and targeted literacy programmes.

2. Robotics

Robotics is the aspect of our CASPER activities for which we are best known. It is branch of engineering that deals with the design, building and operating of robots. Robotics challenges children from 6 and older to develop innovative solutions to challenging problems. It open minds to learn new skills and harness untapped potential.

Through both CASPER and dedicated Robotics Workshops we provide learners with opportunities to engage practically in teams. Children
experience the thrill of creating something from scratch according to their own ideas.. All the skills needed for successful learning in Maths, Science and Technology.

3. Teacher Training

Educating and empowering educators is one of the most important things we do. We offer:

  • Grade R SETA-accredited Teachers Training in Science and Technology, Literacy, and Numeracy. This training is endorsed by the Western Cape Education Department
  • Mathematics, Literacy and Curriculum Management for School Management Teams.

This training provides professional development for Grade 1 - 7 educators in collaboration with the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch provides leadership and management support to all principals and offers support in Mathematics, while UCT provides short courses in Maths (6 schools) and Language (9 schools). ORT SA Cape co-ordinates these programmes while providing the after-school reading, writing and resources programme

4. Educational Research and Evaluation

We specialize in monitoring and evaluation of educational programmes and projects, from learner book analyses to teacher and course evaluation, as an external consultant for the Western Cape Education Department.

  • The CASPER Robotics and Reading Programme contributed to the advancement of Literacy at our school and in the community. The children could apply what they have read, especially the use of instructions to build Robots. This Reading Programme will certainly lead to better understanding and answering of questions in exams. The creation of our Library will further contribute to the Reading Programme.

  • The CASPER Reading Programme increased the learners’ potential and level of reading, as well as boosting their self-confidence.

  • The Science Club that incorporates ORT SA CAPE Robotics has a tremendous impact on the lives of our students.

  • Thank you very much for the opportunity to volunteer as a facilitator on your projects. I have indeed had a really great learning and life changing experience through the work that I have done with your organisation. I have had fun working with the children and I have learnt a lot from them too. I hope to see your organisation’s projects reaching more children and continuing to change lives in the future.
